How to Get Your Dubai Business Cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews

The short answer

Two things have to be true at the same time. Your own pages need to be crawlable by AI bots and written so that a single passage fully answers a question, with a date, a named author and supporting schema. And your business needs to be described on sources the engines already trust, because AI answers are assembled from corroboration, not from whoever ranks first. Doing only the first half is why most Dubai businesses with good SEO still never get named.

Somebody in Dubai is asking ChatGPT for a recommendation in your category right now. They are not going to scroll ten blue links. They will get three names in a paragraph, and then they will pick one.

If your business is not one of those three names, you are not losing a ranking position. You are absent from the consideration set entirely, and unlike page two of Google, there is no page two to be on.

This piece covers what actually drives those citations, why the usual SEO advice does not get you there, and the specific changes worth making on and off your site. It is written for the UAE market, where the shift has moved faster than almost anywhere else on earth.

Why this matters more in the UAE than almost anywhere

The UAE is not an average AI market. It is the leading one.

The Microsoft AI Diffusion Report for the first quarter of 2026 put UAE AI adoption at 70.1 percent of the working-age population, against a global average of 17.8 percent. That made the UAE the first country anywhere to pass the seventy percent mark, roughly four times the world average.

That is workplace usage, and it would be easy to dismiss as not a buying signal. The commercial data says otherwise. A PYMNTS study run with Visa Acceptance Solutions, fielded in March 2026 across the UAE, the US and Brazil, found that 72 percent of UAE shoppers used AI during their most recent purchase. Deloitte's consumer research puts generative AI usage across the UAE and Saudi Arabia at 58 percent of consumers, noticeably ahead of European markets, with 55 percent of those users engaging weekly or daily. Research shared via the Dubai Center for AI reports 67 percent of UAE consumers saying they trust AI systems, against a global average nearer 42 percent, though that figure comes from a single source and is better treated as directional than precise.

Put those together and the UAE picture is unusual in a specific way: high usage combined with high trust. In most markets people use AI and then verify. Here, a larger share act on the answer.

Meanwhile the traditional route is narrowing. SparkToro's analysis from June 2026 found that 68 percent of Google searches now end without a click, up from 60.5 percent in 2024, driven largely by AI Overviews. Pew Research found that when a search produces an AI summary, users click a traditional result on only about 8 percent of visits, compared with 15 percent when no summary appears. AI Overviews now appear in roughly one in four searches.

What that adds up to

Being the source behind the answer is now worth more than being the first link under it. The click you used to compete for is being deleted, and the mention that replaces it goes to whoever the engine trusts enough to name.

The uncomfortable part: your Google rankings do not transfer

This is the finding most businesses have not absorbed, and it is the reason good SEO agencies keep producing confusing results for clients who ask why they are invisible in ChatGPT.

Ahrefs analysed 15,000 queries and found that only around 12 percent of the URLs cited by AI tools also appeared in Google's top ten organic results. Related research synthesised across the major citation studies found that only about 11 percent of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Read that twice. Roughly nine out of ten AI citations go to pages that are not sitting in Google's top ten for the same query, and the different engines largely disagree with each other about who is worth citing.

Ranking well is useful. It is not the mechanism. Search engines rank documents against a query. Generative engines assemble an answer from multiple sources and then decide which of them to name, which is a different job with different inputs. Optimising only for the first and assuming the second follows is the single most common mistake I see in UAE accounts right now.

Where AI answers actually come from

The consolidated picture across the large citation studies, covering well over 680 million individual citations tracked between August 2024 and April 2026, shows something that should reframe your strategy: extreme concentration.

The top fifteen domains account for roughly 68 percent of all AI citation share. Reddit alone accounts for something close to 40 percent of consolidated citations. Wikipedia sits at the top of ChatGPT's own list at around 7.8 percent of its total citations. YouTube, LinkedIn and a small set of large publishers take most of what remains.

Your company website is not on that list and never will be. That sounds like bad news until you understand what it actually means.

It means the engines are not looking for your marketing copy. They are looking for corroboration about you on sources they already trust, and then, having established that you exist and are credible, they will happily cite your own page for the specifics. Corroboration comes first, citation second. Almost every Dubai business I look at has built only the second half.

One more pattern worth knowing. ChatGPT's citation mix shifted noticeably around September 2025, moving weight away from open-forum content toward structured authority. The content types that gained share afterwards shared a consistent profile: extractable, clearly dated, tagged with a named author, and organised into lists and discrete sections rather than flowing essays. That profile is the closest thing the field has to a specification, and it is worth writing to deliberately.

Part one: make your pages extractable

Start here because it is fast, entirely within your control, and most sites fail it on something basic.

Check you are not blocking the crawlers

This is the first thing I check on any UAE site and it fails more often than you would expect. Open your robots.txt and confirm that GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot are not disallowed. Then check your security plugin and your CDN rules, because aggressive bot filtering at that layer blocks AI crawlers silently without touching robots.txt at all. Several Dubai sites I have audited were removed from AI answers entirely by a firewall setting nobody remembered switching on.

Related and frequently confused: Google-Extended governs Gemini and Vertex grounding, while AI Overviews are built from Google's regular search index. Blocking Googlebot removes you from both. Blocking Google-Extended affects the former without fixing the latter.

Answer the question in the first passage

An AI engine lifts self-contained passages. If understanding your answer requires having read the three paragraphs above it, the passage is not liftable and it will not be used.

So under each question-shaped heading, put a complete forty to eighty word answer immediately, before the explanation. Repeat the subject rather than saying "it" or "this". Avoid pronouns that point backwards. Every block should survive being cut out of the page and read on its own, because that is exactly what happens to it.

Write the headings as the questions people actually ask

Not "Our Services" but "How much does a villa renovation cost in Dubai?" Not "Why Choose Us" but "What should you check before hiring a fit-out contractor in the UAE?" Conversational queries into AI tools are longer and more specific than typed searches, and heading text that matches the shape of the question is one of the stronger signals you can send cheaply.

Put facts in structures

Tables, numbered lists and clearly delimited comparisons get extracted far more readily than the same information buried in prose. If you have pricing bands, timelines, eligibility criteria or a comparison between two options, give it a table. This is not a design preference, it is a parsing advantage.

Add the trust furniture

Do not hide content behind JavaScript

Several AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript the way Googlebot does. Content that only appears after a script runs, inside an accordion that loads on click, or behind a tab that fetches on demand may simply not exist as far as they are concerned. View your page with JavaScript disabled. Whatever remains is roughly what they see.

Part two: build the corroboration, which is where most Dubai businesses lose

Given the concentration data, this is where the real work sits, and it is the half that gets skipped because it looks like PR rather than marketing.

You are trying to make it so that when an engine assembles a picture of your category in Dubai, your name appears on several independent sources that it already trusts. In rough order of value for a UAE SME:

  1. Third-party roundups and listicles. "Best interior fit-out companies in Dubai" style articles are cited constantly because they are structured, comparative and exactly the shape of the question being asked. Getting included in existing ones is usually more valuable than writing your own.
  2. LinkedIn. One of the most-cited domains overall, and unusually well suited to the UAE B2B market, where it is already where business identity lives. Consistent, substantive posting under a real name builds an entity the engines can read.
  3. Reddit and community discussion. Uncomfortable for most UAE businesses, and still the largest single citation source by a wide margin. You cannot astroturf this, and attempts to do so are obvious and damaging. What works is genuine, useful participation in the relevant subreddits over months, and being the kind of business people mention unprompted.
  4. Directories and local listings with consistent details. Google Business Profile, established UAE directories and your trade or chamber listings. The value is less the link and more the repetition of an identical name, address and phone number across sources, which is what lets an engine resolve you as one entity.
  5. Earned media with original data. The most reliable way into a large publisher is to hand them a number nobody else has. A small original survey or an analysis of your own anonymised project data is achievable for an SME and is the sort of thing that gets picked up and then cited repeatedly.
  6. YouTube. Consistently near the top of citation lists, and badly underused by UAE service businesses. A plainly titled video answering a real customer question does work that a blog post cannot.

The test to apply

Open a fresh ChatGPT session with no history and ask it to recommend businesses in your category in Dubai. Then ask where it got that. If your competitors are named and you are not, the gap is almost never their website. It is that they are described somewhere the engine trusts and you are only described by yourself.

Part three: be one entity, everywhere

Entity resolution is the quiet part that breaks things. An engine has to be confident that the business named in a directory, the one on LinkedIn, the one in a roundup article and the one on your site are all the same organisation.

Make that easy. Use one exact legal or trading name and do not drift between variants. Keep address and phone identical everywhere, down to formatting. Put a sameAs array in your Organization schema listing your LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and Google Business Profile URLs. Maintain a genuinely substantive About page, because that is frequently the page an engine reads to decide what you are.

This sounds pedantic. In a market with as many similarly named trading companies as Dubai has, it is often the difference between being resolved as a real business and being discarded as ambiguous.

Part four: measure it, because Search Console will not

You cannot manage this from GSC. Citations mostly do not produce a click, and the ones that do arrive as referral traffic rather than search impressions.

What works is unglamorous and takes about an hour a month:

Expect movement. Citation sets reshuffle over weeks rather than years, and a single platform update can reorder your whole category. This is a maintained position, not a project with an end date.

What does not work

Does it actually work?

Fair question, and one I would ask of anyone selling this.

The clearest result I can point to is a villa renovation business in Dubai. The work was the combination described above: rebuilding the site's service pages into question-shaped, answer-first sections with schema and real credentials attached, fixing entity consistency across listings, and building corroboration through third-party mentions rather than only on-site content. The outcome was a number one position in Gemini's AI overview for "villa renovation company Dubai", alongside first-page rankings on more than four commercial keywords and a run of high-budget enquiries over the following months.

One case is one case. What it demonstrates is narrower than a guarantee: in a UAE category where nobody else had done this work, a deliberate GEO build was enough to take the position. That window is open in a lot of Dubai categories right now, and it will not stay open once the field catches up.

A realistic starting order

  1. Audit robots.txt, your security plugin and your CDN for blocked AI crawlers. Fix anything blocking them.
  2. Run your prompt set once to establish a baseline of where you currently stand.
  3. Rewrite your three highest-value pages into question headings with answer-first passages.
  4. Add or correct Organization, Person, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema, with a full sameAs array.
  5. Fix name, address and phone consistency across every listing you can find.
  6. Target five relevant third-party roundups for inclusion.
  7. Start consistent LinkedIn publishing under a real named person.
  8. Re-run the prompt set monthly and keep the log.

Steps one through five are a couple of weeks of focused work. Six and seven are the ones that compound, and they are the ones that get abandoned.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Two things have to be true at once. Your pages must be crawlable by AI bots and written so a single passage answers a question completely, with a date, a named author and supporting schema. And your business must be described on sources the engines already trust, such as directories, third-party roundups, LinkedIn and community discussions. Your own website alone is rarely enough, because AI engines corroborate before they cite.

Does ranking number one on Google get me cited in AI answers?

Mostly no. An Ahrefs analysis of 15,000 queries found only about 12 percent of URLs cited by AI tools also appear in Google's top ten organic results. The two are related but separate systems, and a strong SEO position is not a substitute for generative engine optimisation.

What is generative engine optimisation?

GEO is the practice of making a business appear inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. It combines technical crawlability, answer-first content structure, structured data and off-site corroboration across the sources those engines already cite.

Does AI search really matter in the UAE?

More than almost anywhere. The Microsoft AI Diffusion Report for Q1 2026 put UAE AI adoption at 70.1 percent of the working-age population against a global average of 17.8 percent. A PYMNTS and Visa study fielded in March 2026 found 72 percent of UAE shoppers used AI during their most recent purchase.

How long does it take to get cited?

On-page changes can surface within days to a few weeks once pages are recrawled. Off-site corroboration is slower, usually two to three months before it appears consistently. Citation sets are volatile and reshuffle over weeks, so treat it as a maintained position rather than a finished project.

Should I block AI crawlers in robots.txt?

Not if you want to be cited. Confirm GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot are allowed, and check your security plugin and CDN too, since bot filtering there blocks crawlers without touching robots.txt.

How do I track AI citations?

Search Console will not show them. Build a fixed list of buyer questions, run them monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews in logged-out sessions, and log whether you were named and what was said. Separately segment referral traffic from AI domains in analytics.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No, it is extending it. Technical health, crawlability and genuine authority still matter and feed both. What changes is that structure, citability and off-site corroboration now carry weight that ranking position alone does not.

The short version

AI engines cite a small, concentrated set of sources and they corroborate before they name anyone. That means the job splits cleanly in two: make your own pages liftable, then make sure other trusted sources describe you accurately. Most businesses do the first and skip the second, which is why they stay invisible despite decent SEO.

In the UAE the timing is unusually favourable. Adoption and trust are both among the highest in the world, and most local competitors have not started. That combination does not last.
